Antique goffering iron with poker
Goffering irons were introduced in the 17th century. The poker would be inserted into a fire until red hot. It would then be placed in the goffering iron (the cylindrical barrel). Once the goffering iron was hot, damp ribbon, lace and fabrics containing pleats would be placed on the barrel and the necessary 'ironing' would be carried out.
Most goffering irons offered for sale are just that - the iron without the poker. This is a rare item as both the iron and poker are together. I have no reason to believe that the poker is not period to the goffering iron.
A number 1 has been stamped in metal on the underside of the base as shown in some of the photographs
I cannot be precise as to the date of this iron and poker other than to state that it dates to somewhere between the 17th and 19th centuries. My best guess is that it is probably between 1750 and 1850 in date.
Postage is just to within the UK mainland with delivery being via UPS
